Creating a Coffee Bar

Do you love coffee, but find your splurges at the coffee houses are costing you way too much?  Try creating your own coffee bar at home. The picture above is of mine!

1.  First locate a nook in the kitchen, dining room is best, but even your living room is acceptable. Make sure there is an outlet close by.  (We had a wine bar in the kitchen corner that we just didn't use...after a few changes...wah-lah!  A Coffee Bar!)

2.  I suggest you try to gather as much around your house before buying anything. A small old table, chest of drawers or hope chest can be used as your base. Plug in your favorite coffee maker.

3.  Next, gather a grouping of jars, glasses, mugs or other containers to keep your supplies like coffee, creamer, sugars and spoons in. (I used a couple jars, a vintage coffee can and old silver goblet and saucer).

4.  To make the space feel even more special, create a little platter to hold the collection on: a framed mirror, large plate, cork board or old silver platter.

5.  You may want to add a basket of assorted teas and hot chocolate packets.  Think about recycling some old spice jars into cinammon and cocoa shakers.

6. Add plenty of lighting to make the space feel cozy.

7.  Step back and take a look at your creation, anything more you want to add? There are no rules!  Now you will enjoy making your own cup of coffee you won't miss the coffee houses and you can spend your coffee money elsewhere!

UPDATE: Breast Lump - after the Biopsy

Today I discovered the results of my breast lump biopsy.  Benign.  Thank you Lord.  That is such a sweet word to hear.  Five days of waiting for the result was very hard to get through.  It only took so long because I had the biopsy the Friday before Christmas.  My husband and I prayed a lot during this time.  I will have a follow-up with the doctor this Friday to see if the lump needs to be completely removed, or if I just need to monitor it.  I must admit I didn't pay much attention to what the nurse was saying after I heard the word "benign".

Fortunately, at least at this time, I will not be writing about the steps taken to fight breast cancer, since I will not be experiencing them.  Just going through the five weeks it took from the first time I thought I found a lump until my test results were full of anxiety and fear.  I cannot imagine what I would be feeling now if the results were positive.  I have two sisters that are breast cancer survivors, and I know I never felt the fear as they did, even though I was praying for them at that time.

I pray for all of those fighting cancer, no matter what kind.  It is a horrible disease.  May we all be mindful of this disease and remember our mammograms, self-checks and annual doctor's visits. Cancer does not discriminate, we can take the best care of our bodies and it will still attack us.  All we can do is try to catch it early and fight through it.  God knows the challenges we will face in our lives, and I thank Him that He never leaves us in our times of trouble.

Recipe: Fruit Cocktail Cake

My son Austin brags about his future mother-in-law's Fruit Cocktail Cake.  I knew I had tried one before and low and behold my sister, Lindy gave me a book of my late mother's recipes, and there it was....the first page!  So when Austin came to visit this Christmas I made my mother's version (doubling the recipe).  Not quite what he is used to, but I think it passed his approval.  This cake is moist and sticky - yummy!  The above picture was taken "before" it was baked. It disappeared before I could take an "after" pic.   Here's the recipe, I highly recommend it!

   2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp salt
2 tsp soda
1 15oz can Fruit Cocktail (drained)
1 egg

Mix dry ingredients.  Add fruit cocktail and egg.  It seems very dry at first, but it will all mix in.  Pour into an ungreased 8"x8" pan and sprinkle the top with 1 cup of brown sugar and 1 cup chopped pecans (optional).  Bake at 325 degrees for 45 - 50 minutes.

While cake is still warm, prepare the butter sauce....In small saucepan melt and combine:

1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup Half 'n Half
1 stick butter

Pour butter sauce evenly over the cake.  Serve warm or cold.

WHAT IS IN MY PURSE (and keeping it organized)

You can tell a lot about a girl/woman by what they carry in their purse.  So I thought I'd share my current purse and it's contents with you.  What's in your purse?

My favorite purse is this one by Fossil.  It is just the right size for me.  I don't like carrying a big heavy bag.  I would prefer a small satchel, but everytime I down size I have to give up on needed essentials.  So I compromise and carry a mid-sized bag.  This handbag is perfect.  I love the fruity motif and the colors.
Upon opening my bag, it looks very tidy - (because I cleaned it out for this post).  I have to clean out tissues and receipts on a daily basis, but it is easy to keep everything in it's place because of all the pockets. A tidy purse makes life soooo much easier.
EVERYTHING I NEED IN MY PURSE:

Group 1:  Bath and Body Works Energy Body Lotion in Mandarin Lime
Bath and Body Lotion in White Citrus
Bath and Body Mandarin Nectar PocketBac
                Small Nail File

Sugar Free tea mints by Minteas
                 Ball Point Pen
Small Package of Tissues my husband brought back from Germany
                 The Crochet Dude Tape Measure
Group 3:  Two of my medications (I am diabetic)
Glucose Tablets in Fruit Punch by Reli On
Small Hand Mirror in a pouch
Group 4:  Clinique Lipstick Pouch with:
Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Hibiscus
Mox Botanicals Lip Butter in Pomegranate & Fig
Group 5:  Floral and See-Through Make-up Bag with:
Bare Minerals Foundation in Fairly Light

                 Travel Sized Advil
Perfume Sample Spray in Loverdose by Diesel

                  Clippers

#7:   Fossil Billfold with cards and bills
*Not Shown:  my phone and keys - oops!

I hope you liked seeing how I organize my purse and what I feel is necessary to keep with me at all times when I am out and about.  If you are interested in what others carry in their bags - be sure to look up videos on youtube...."What's in my Purse"....or "What's in my Bag"...you'll be amazed at all of the different stuff people carry - I've found cool products and stuff that I didn't even know existed.

What do you keep in your purse/bag?  Feel free to share and/or comment below.  Thank you!

Dining Table for the Holidays

We are getting ready for a large crowd of family and friends for Christmas.  Fortunately we have a large table (inherited from my mother-in-law).  I have some depression glass handed down from my grandmother, but not enough.  Same thing with my bone china - not a complete set.  So I combined the two.  I made my table runner out of foiled gift wrap. Every thing doesn't match, but it does make a nice table setting.

Treat the doggies this season to a homemade treat!

DOGGIE BISCUTS

1 1/2 cups rolled oats
 1/3 cup butter
 1 1/4 cups boiling water
2 beef or chicken stock cubes
 1 cup peanut butter
 1 egg
2 cups whole meal/whole wheat flour

Preheat to 330 degrees...line two baking trays with baking paper (foil or parchment). Combine oats, margarine, cubes and boiling water. Let stand for 10 min. Stir in peanut butter and egg. Mix in flour until a stiff dough has formed. Knead dough until smooth. Roll out to about 3/8", with cookie cutter of your choice. Bake 50 - 60 minutes (turning cookies over 1/2 way). When cool, they should be crisp and hard. Store in airtight container in pantry for up to 12 months. But ours won't last that long. We spoil our doggies!

Craft: Easy Candy Cane Mice

Do you have children that are antsy today and can't wait for Christmas morning?  Have them make some candy cane mice to hang on the tree.  Supplies:  Candy Canes; felt; pom-poms; googly eyes; glue dots; scissors.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOU FEEL A LUMP

I was going to wait until after I received my results for my biopsy (which was performed yesterday) before posting anything about my breast lump and cancer.  I should be getting a call the day after Christmas, but I thought "why wait?"  My emotions are very raw right now, and this is what I am feeling right now.  I do not know if I have breast cancer or not.

Two of my sisters are breast cancer survivors.  What is odd, is they found within a month of each other, and they are 10 years apart in age.  That was 2 1/2 years ago and I am very happy to say they are both doing well, now.  My eldest sister had to have a mastectomy and chemo, my other sister, a lumpectomy and radiation.  Quite a struggle for both of them.

I thought I found a lump in "Thelma" (my left breast) last month.  Upon receiving my call, the doctors office did not follow protocol and order me an urgent mamogram, but scheduled me two weeks later for a normal mammogram.  Upon explaining the lump to the tech performing the mam, she told me it should have been urgently handled, but "oh well" what can you do?  Next time - hopefully there won't be a next time - I will DEMAND it being handled better.  YOU have to be your own advocate.

Anyway, after the mamogram, I was notifed that indeed I had suspitious lump, but it was in "Louise", not Thelma...so my right breast was the problem.  I thought the mamogram was wrong, but they were right.  It was almost like a little angel had me think I felt one in the left breast, just to get me in for my mamogram....blessing in disguise.

I then had a diagnostic mamogram - smaller paddles to locate the lump.  As well as an ultra sound.  No pain - Yay!  The radiologist came in right away and gave me the news I needed to have a biopsy.

I hate pain - I mean, hate.  I am a wimp!  You would think after giving birth three times - 2 natural (no meds) and one, c-section, I could handle pain, but no....I flaked out.  Cried. Bawled.

I called my sisters as well as googled "breast lump biopsy" to see what to expect.  There are several ways to biopsy.  I did not have a clue which way I would be handled.  I was a mess, but after praying, I knew I was in God's hands and he had everything under contol.  My husband - God bless him, came with me yesterday to the doctor.

He examined my films and felt the lump himself.  And explained the best way to handle it would be local anesthesia (through small needles and multiple shots in the breast to numb me) and go in that way.  I pulled my "big girl panties" up, and told Louise we could handle it, and, after taking a Lorezopam - my panic pill, we did just fine.  The first needle could hardly be felt, just a little sting - truthfully, it was not bad at all.  After that, each needle became less noticeable.  I just felt a sense of poking and prodding, my husband said the whole proceedure lasted about 25 minutes.  The showed me the samples in a bottle - they just looked like long stringy things about a 1/2 inch long.  I was able to go home with an ice pack right away, took some Tylenol and have been just a little sore since.

Now, since my biopsy was not only on a Friday, but right before the Christmas holiday, they will not have my results until probably Wednesday.  Most of the time, tho, they have the results within 24 hours.

Now, time, to wait.

ABOUT ME

Hello!  This is my first day ever to "blog".  I feel the need to open my own blog at this time because I find myself wanting to write excessively on facebook and although I have several followers on these posts I hate to overwhelm all my facebook friends.

I am a Christian woman in her (mid-hmmm-hmm) 40s. Mother to three boys:  Ethan 22; Austin 19; and Samuel 12.  My husband Gary is the love of my life.  We live in northern Oklahoma in a nice city in a nice little house with three dogs and two cats. I would say, my life is "nice"....but, yes there is ALWAYS a but....life can be very hectic....and not just my life, but yours as well I'm sure.  I have been facing several changes in my life and have been searching for others who are going through the same things in hope of finding help, therefore maybe I can be an encouragement to others as well.

I named my blog "Keep Calm and KERRI On" because I do find that I tend to panic and over-react when life throws me a curve.  I must remember to keep calm and carry on, it's just a great little twist that my name is Kerri.  God is a great part of my life, I put him first and its not always easy to have faith and trust, as I'm sure will unfold in the days ahead in this blog.  But God has everything under control, I know He has the answers not me.

Some of the things I hope to talk about in this blog are:
Health issues such as: Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Breast Cancer, Depression and Anxiety.
Artsy Fartsy Stuff:  Pastel Paintings, Watercolors, Zentangle and Crafts of all sorts.
Product Reviews:  Ipsy Monthly Gift Bags, Sephora, Clinique, and other beauty items
And whatever things cross my mind that I feel a need to share. I hope you enjoy my blog.  Although it doesn't show yet, I do have a sense of humor, and I'm sure it will show itself soon.  Thank you for reading!
